Consumers are losing the freedom to repair their products. From cell phones to vehicles and video game consoles; manufacturers leverage various legal tactics, predatory designs, and even lawbreaking to force consumers to use the manufacturers’ repair services. 

Then you are left with no choice. Forced to choose the manufacturers’ monopolistic repair and maintenance network provided by their authorized dealer. 

Should you not have more choices for your product’s repair and maintenance needs?

We believe that repair should be widely accepted, reasonably priced, and accessible. Therefore, fixing a product should be less expensive than acquiring a new one. We fight against illegal measures that stop individuals and independent repairers from fixing defective goods. 

Most fundamentally, repair restrictions limit consumers’ autonomy to fix and tinker with their goods as they see fit. This suppresses exploration, innovation, and self-reliance and undermines common understandings of ownership. Consumers do not fully own their products when they cannot repair, modify, or tinker with their rightfully purchased goods.

Each of us must take action to build an ecosystem which hosts an alliance of stakeholders, including engineers, libertarians, environmentalists, owners of independent repair shops, gamers, hobbyists, farmers and doctors. Let’s promote repair-friendly laws, rules, policies, and standards at the legislative, state, and local levels.

Independent Repairers work hours to identify and source the correct spares to conduct a repair. Due to a lack of support from the Manufacturers, Independent Garages and small businesses in the repair chain are being pushed out of business, thus reducing service options for the customer and making the environment less competitive and stifling innovation.
